As your natural gas provider, we’re committed to providing you the best possible service all year round. Part of that commitment means staying prepared for wintery conditions.
We’re here to help you get prepared, too. Follow these six simple safety tips to keep you and your loved ones protected:
- Only heat your home with appliances specifically designed for space heating, such as your furnace. Never attempt to heat your home with your stove, oven, grill or anything not designed for space heating. While electric space heaters are great for warming small spaces, they should not be used to heat your home.
- Natural gas appliances, like your furnace, stove or fireplace, require good ventilation to operate safely. Make sure your outdoor vent openings and air intakes are clear and not obstructed by snow or ice. Never place items in front of these air intakes and vent openings.
- Natural gas meters are weatherproof but need to be kept free of snow and ice build-up during extreme conditions. Gently remove snow and ice from your meter with a broom or brush, and never chip the ice away with a hard object or attempt to use hot water or melting chemicals to clean it off.
- Take steps to prevent water pipes from freezing and warm air from leaking outside by insulating your pipes and opening your cabinets.
- Always operate back-up gas generators outdoors – never indoors – and keep a safe distance from your home.
- Natural gas smells like rotten eggs. If you smell gas or hear a hissing sound, leave immediately and call Spire or 911.

How to save energy—and lower the impact to your bill
When the temperatures drop and winds kick in, it takes more energy to keep your home or business warm. These steps can help you save energy—which means a lower impact to your bill.
- Seal areas around your home or business where air could come in. These leaky areas often can be found around pipes that connect to the outside, chimneys, unfinished spaces behind cabinets, recessed lights in insulated ceilings, and closets.
- Keep your home at a comfortable, energy-efficient temperature.
- During the day, open curtains on south-facing windows to let sunlight heat your home. Close them at night to reduce potential incoming cold from any drafty windows.
- If windows feel drafty, install insulating drapes, shades or weather sealing tape to prevent cold air from seeping in.
- If you’re in a position where paying your natural gas bill is difficult, please call 2-1-1. Help is available.
