Recent estimates by the Department of Energy indicate that approximately 20% of the steam leaving a central boiler plant can be lost via leaking steam traps. Knowing the health of your steam traps can save you energy and money.
As a requirement for both steam trap rebates listed below, you must include steam trap survey/failure study report, equipment proof of purchase and installer sign-off as verification of work completion.
Equipment | Requirement | Rebate | |
---|---|---|---|
Space heating steam trap (Replacement or rebuild) | See above for requirement | 50% of the equipment cost up to $100 per steam trap | |
| See above for requirement | 50% of equipment cost up to $200 per steam trap |
When it’s time to replace an old natural gas storage water heater, newer, more energy-efficient storage models are designed to significantly reduce the amount of standby heat loss and heat lost up the flue, making them less expensive to operate. Or get the ultimate upgrade and install a tankless water heater.
Energy-efficient tankless water heaters provide an endless supply of hot water to suit even the most demanding applications – from restaurants to hotels to multifamily residences to schools and more – conserving energy that can save thousands of dollars in capital, operations and life cycle costs, while saving space.

Custom rebates are available to Spire commercial and industrial customers for the installation of any natural gas related energy efficiency improvement that does not qualify for a standard rebate. All custom rebate projects must receive a rebate commitment from the program prior to the starting the project. Custom projects are analyzed and pre-approved using program benefit/cost criteria determined by incremental energy-savings, project cost and payback. Projects must achieve a minimum two year payback to receive a rebate. Rebate amounts are individually determined by project and are calculated as the lesser of:
The following are examples of how each of these criteria could determine the custom rebate:
Incremental project cost | $130,000 |
MCF savings | 3,400 |
Customer annual bill savings | $22,400 |
Payback | 5.8 |
Rebate at two year payback | $85,200 |
Rebate at $6.63 per MCF | $22,542 |
Spire rebate | $22,542 |
Incremental project cost | $55,000 |
MCF savings | 3,800 |
Customer annual bill savings | $22,400 |
