The story
Having been in business since 1978, Danny Watkins was no stranger to natural gas. But with an aging boiler and a promotional incentive to switch to electric in 2007, Danny converted. It wasn’t long before he realized that to reduce his $2,200 a month electric bill, he needed to return to cleaner, reliable, more affordable natural gas.
One night, I was talking to my wife about the overwhelming electric bill and she said, “Why don’t you call the natural gas company, Spire?” So, the next day, I did.

Consistently cheaper rates resulting in significant monthly savings
I was offered a five-year, fixed-rate contract that made my monthly electric costs comparable to natural gas. After that contract was up, my rates skyrocketed. And during peak months, we were charged three times more than our normal rate to run our boiler after 12:00 p.m. When I contacted the electric company to talk about a possible solution, they suggested I work at night, which does not make sense for my business. One night I was talking to my wife about the overwhelming electric bill and she said, “Why don’t you call Spire?" So the next day, I did.
When I reached out to Spire, I was quickly referred to speak with Kelvin Johnson, the commercial business development representative in my area. He was great to work with from the start. I told him about my current struggles, and I told him how much I was looking to spend. He worked with me to make switching to natural gas fit within my budget. He stuck with me and guided me every step of the way.
Working with Spire was a great experience. I tell everyone I know in the business about them. They even worked after hours on the weekend so that I didn’t lose a single day of business. We started the conversion process on Friday night, and I was up and running by Sunday night, ready for business Monday morning.
We were breaking our necks every day to try and get the cleaning done before noon when the rates tripled. Now we can run the boiler all day with no change in rates. This way, we can be faster and more efficient for our customers. And, we’re saving a lot of money every month—between $800-1,100. So overall, we are breathing a lot easier now.
