Learn more about a special one-time credit for some customers in Alabama
Beginning in April, we will begin distributing one-time special bill credits to approximately 419,000 customers in the state of Alabama (northern and central Alabama only).
This type of customer credit is a part of the rate making process (Rate Stabilization and Equalization RSE) we have in place with the Alabama Public Service Commission.
We file quarterly points of test as a part of RSE each year – based on actual and projected financial results at January 31, April 30, July 31, and September 30.
For January 31, 2021 results, we reported a higher than anticipated revenue for the year, resulting in a reduction to customer rates effective on April 1, 2021.
During its monthly March meeting, the Commission requested that 100% of the higher than anticipated revenue be returned to Spire customers in (insert region) in April 2021, rather than spreading it over a 12-month period.
Each customer’s bill credit is based on their actual usage that appears on your February bill.
For customers whose accounts are current, with no past-due balances, the one-time credit will appear two ways:
- On a customer’s paper bill, the one-time credit will appear as a line item labeled either “Special refund” OR “Previous balance credit”
- On the My Account online customer account portal, the same credit will be always be shown as a “Special Refund"
Some customers with past-due balances, or arrearages, may not see a credit appear on their printed bills -- the credit will simply be applied to the past-due balance and reflected in the current total due.
For the month of April, you received a one-time bill credit, which is part of our rate stabilization and equalization program, or ratemaking process, that we have in place with the Alabama Public Service Commission.
Your one-time bill credit is based on the actual amount of natural gas shown on the bill you received in February.
- This could be due to two separate reasons – usage or past due balance
- The bill credit that each customer receives is based on the natural gas usage that appears on the bill they received in February, minus any past-due balance
- One customer’s one-time credit may be larger because they used more natural gas, as shown on their February customer bill
- If you have a past due balance on your account, your bill credit would have been applied directly to that balance. In that case, you wouldn’t see the credit reflected on your bill
