Learn how we’re maintaining and improving critical infrastructure and investing in technology to serve Missouri customers
Serving the needs of Missouri customers
At Spire, we’re committed to the communities we serve. As part of that commitment, we’ve been listening and working hard to deliver programs and services our customers want and value.
Since our last rate case was completed in 2022, we've continued to make investments in our natural gas delivery system and technology to benefit customers. For example:
- We've invested nearly $1 billion to maintain and modernize service infrastructure, in turn reducing emissions and improving the safety of our distribution system
- New infrastructure means lower maintenance costs and improved reliability and service for years to come. It will also ensure that Missouri has the advanced energy infrastructure to fuel economic growth and job creation
- During FY24, Spire was part of securing 37 publicly announced economic development wins in Missouri, representing an investment of nearly $3.7 billion in the state economy and resulting in the creation of more than 4,000 jobs. Access to natural gas played a key role in securing many of these projects
- We're continuing the rollout of advanced metering technology for customers across Missouri. The upgrade offers both enhanced safety features and, once fully implemented, improved insights into monthly energy usage
Since 2022, we've invested nearly $1B in pipeline infrastructure — ensuring safe, reliable natural gas delivery to all customers.
During a rate case, the Public Service Commission (PSC) examines the value of services customers have received and creates rates based on already incurred costs.
In this rate case, we are asking the PSC for the following:
- We are looking to recover a portion of higher costs incurred by higher inflation and interest rates experienced since our last filing in 2022
- We also hope to create one Spire Missouri service territory, providing customers consistent rates across the state and streamlining operations, ultimately creating efficiencies for customers and Spire
- Lastly, we're requesting a better way to manage the impacts of weather and the effects of conservation on customer usage, as allowed under Missouri law
A typical timeframe of rate case approval with the Commission is 11 months from the time of filing.
New rates will go into effect Fall 2025.
A customer bill is largely made up of two components – Spire’s delivery charge and the cost of the natural gas itself.
While the delivery charge portion of a customer’s bill – which covers the cost of the service we provide to safely deliver natural gas to a home or business – is expected to increase under this request, the cost of natural gas seen on customer bills has decreased significantly compared to last year.
After recent approval of a new Purchased Gas Adjustment by the Commission, the average Spire Missouri residential customer is currently seeing an overall bill decrease of more than 15% due to those lower gas costs.
If approved, the average residential bill for Spire Missouri customers would increase next Fall by approximately $14, or roughly 15%, under the current market conditions.
However, even with the proposed increase in this rate case, due to recent rate decreases, overall customer bills will continue to be slightly lower or unchanged compared to what customers paid in 2024* when new rates take effect Fall 2025.
*Assuming natural gas markets stay constant
