Recent rate changes for Spire Missouri customers

Purchased Gas Adjustment (PGA) update

Beginning Nov. 26, 2025, the Purchased Gas Adjustment (PGA) rate noted on your bill will change. You can find the current PGA rate here.

For the average residential customer in the eastern Missouri service area, the new rate increase will equate to approximately $5.79 per month (or 6.43%)*. The price of natural gas will increase to $0.61674 per Ccf from $0.52486 per Ccf.

For the average residential customer in the western Missouri service area, the new rate increase will equate to approximately $3.33 per month (or 3.55%).* The price of natural gas will increase to $.67976 per Ccf from $0.62139 per Ccf.

It’s important to note that even with this increase to gas costs, the average eastern and western Missouri residential customer bill will be close to 2% lower than 2024.

And in comparing rates across our service territories, natural gas remains the most affordable energy source for heating, water heating and cooking. On average, Missouri households pay two to three times more for electricity than for natural gas.

* The actual impact to a customer’s bill will vary based on how much energy is used, which is primarily determined by the weather and outdoor temperatures.

What is a Purchased Gas Adjustment or PGA?

A Purchased Gas Adjustment rate, or PGA, reflects the actual cost for natural gas. Missouri’s Public Service Commission, which regulates utilities, established the PGA as a mechanism for natural gas utilities to adjust customer rates according to fluctuations in the wholesale price of natural gas. These new rates reflect market conditions.

This cost of gas is exactly what Spire pays to source the natural gas it delivers to customers – with no markup.  PGA is adjusted at least once every year, in November.

Why has the PGA changed?

Changes in natural gas prices can mean a lower or higher PGA on your bill compared to your previous statement.  The PGA reflects the cost Spire pays to purchase natural gas, which is then passed along to you with no markup.

This year, the increase for both Spire East and Spire West is due to higher gas prices, largely driven by higher domestic demand and liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to other countries. Even with these higher prices, natural gas remains the most affordable energy source for heating, water heating and cooking.

Past changes

  • In November 2024, Spire filed a new rate case with the Missouri Public Service Commission (PSC). After a nearly 10-month process, the PSC issued a final order on Sept. 3, 2025, which establishes new rates for Spire customer bills which impacts customer delivery costs.
  • These increases are to Spire’s cost of service to recover investments to upgrade infrastructure and ensure we’re able to continue safely delivering reliable natural gas service to our customers.
  • The new rates are effective Oct. 24, 2025.
  • As part of the final order, the PSC also approved an increase in funding for our appliance repair program and a new assistance program that will waive our customer charge of $22 for qualified customers. This new program will go into effect in 2026, but the appliance repair changes go into effect on Oct. 24.

What do the changes mean for my bill?

  • The natural gas usage billing rate is changing. For eastern Missouri customers, the increase will be about $8.21 (or 10%) per month*. For western Missouri customers, the increase will be about $8.93 (or 10.5%) per month. *
  • While customers will see an increase in service delivery charges, overall, we anticipate the average monthly residential bill to be lower than what customers saw in 2024 given a significant decrease in gas costs on customer bills last November.
  • Limited-income customers and those who struggle to make payments will continue to have access to multiple assistance programs, including a new assistance program that will waive the customer charge of $22 for qualified customers on limited incomes.

*Compared to existing rates and assuming the same level of usage

Frequently asked questions

  • What is a rate case? A rate case is a formal process where an electric, gas or water utility requests permission from the Missouri Public Service Commission (PSC) to increase or change the rates it charges customers, usually to recover costs for infrastructure, operations or investments. The PSC reviews the request through a legal proceeding involving evidence, public input and participation from consumer advocates before deciding whether to approve, modify or deny the proposed rates.
  • When will new rates go into effect? The new rates will go into effect October 24, 2025.
  • What goes into a monthly gas bill? A customer bill is largely made up of two components — Spire’s delivery charge and the cost of the natural gas itself.

While the delivery charge portion of a customer’s bill — which covers the cost of the service we provide to safely deliver natural gas to a home or business — will increase under this rate case, the cost of natural gas seen on customer bills has decreased significantly compared to last year.
