Know the facts about natural gas

Cleaner and more efficient

In the Kansas City area today, natural gas is cleaner, and more efficient, than electric generation and will remain cleaner for the foreseeable future.

Residential natural gas use accounts for approximately 6% of greenhouse gas emissions,* with other research indicating even less than that.

Natural gas is an incredibly reliable energy source

Natural gas is an incredibly reliable energy source—and notably more reliable than electricity.

In fact, natural gas is incorporated into the energy resource plans of many businesses to ensure business continuity during volatile weather. In fact, natural gas is the go-to source of energy for hospitals. Hospitals rely on natural gas to provide continuous, critical and often life-saving care to patients regardless of weather.

Evidence of Spire’s natural gas reliability and resiliency was front and center in February 2021 during Winter Storm Uri:

  • Spire kept natural gas flowing to the Kansas City area during this event, keeping families safe and warm
  • Our ability to provide energy to our customers during this event demonstrates that a balanced energy approach creates the most resilient and reliable energy security for the region. Natural gas is, and must continue to be, a part of that long-term solution

Natural gas is affordable

Natural gas remains the most affordable way to heat homes and fuel industry.

Even with recent cost increases due to market conditions, the cost of heating with natural gas is substantially less compared to electric heating.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s “Winter Fuels” forecast from October 2021 expected that U.S. households using natural gas as their primary space heating fuel this winter will save more than $500, on average, when compared to households using electric for their heating.
