In the Kansas City area today, natural gas is cleaner, and more efficient, than electric generation and will remain cleaner for the foreseeable future.

Residential natural gas use accounts for approximately 6% of greenhouse gas emissions,* with other research indicating even less than that.

Natural gas is an incredibly reliable energy source—and notably more reliable than electricity. 

In fact, natural gas is incorporated into the energy resource plans of many businesses to ensure business continuity during volatile weather. In fact, natural gas is the go-to source of energy for hospitals. Hospitals rely on natural gas to provide continuous, critical and often life-saving care to patients regardless of weather. 

Evidence of Spire’s natural gas reliability and resiliency was front and center in February 2021 during Winter Storm Uri:

Natural gas remains the most affordable way to heat homes and fuel industry. 

Even with recent cost increases due to market conditions, the cost of heating with natural gas is substantially less compared to electric heating. 

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s “Winter Fuels” forecast from October 2021 expected that U.S. households using natural gas as their primary space heating fuel this winter will save more than $500, on average, when compared to households using electric for their heating.
