Learn more about how Spire validates your monthly payments
When you go to make an online payment with your checking or savings account, you may not think about the many systems working hard in the background to make sure your information is accurate and secure.
The National Automated Clearing House Association (Nacha) has a validation rule called the Account Validation Rule in place for online payments made with bank accounts (does not pertain to debit or credit cards) to make sure bank account information is accurate and not fraudulent.
Spire participates in the Nacha validation process to prevent payment mistakes and help prevent fraud. Many financial institutions already participate in the Nacha process, as well, but some smaller, local banks or credit unions do not.
If your bank doesn’t participate in the validation process, our system won’t accept your payment from a checking or savings account. However, you can always pay with a debit or credit card that connects to that same bank account.
The validation process is also new to Spire, so you may not be able to validate and use an account you previously had saved as your preferred payment method.
Eventually, all financial institutions will be required by Nacha to use their validation, so you may be able to use the account again in the future.
