Spire employees help reel in smiles at annual fishing event

Supporting community events and providing opportunities for kids and families to experience new activities are part of Spire’s commitment to the communities where we live and work. That’s why Spire employees in the Birmingham, Al. area recently volunteered with the annual Gone Fishin’ event.

Each year, the Exceptional Anglers organization hosts Gone Fishin, Not Just Wishin’─ a three-day event held in Oak Mountain State Park for local students with disabilities. The event encourages students to get outside, learn to fish and be active.

Spire has proudly sponsored this event for 29 years — through both charitable donations and volunteer service by employees.

This year, 150 Spire volunteers gave their time to assist hundreds of students with fishing, arts and crafts, karaoke, storytelling and learning about aspects of water safety, including the proper use of life jackets.

Kathryn Lee, Spire workload planning analyst, has participated in this event since the very beginning, and this year she was once again instrumental in the coordination and planning of Spire’s involvement.

“The students look forward to this event each year, as do our volunteers. It’s a very rewarding experience to share in the fun with these exceptional children each year,” - Kathryn Lee, Spire workload planning analyst
