Spire partners with Habitat for Humanity to make affordable homeownership a reality in Bessemer

Habitat for Humanity works to create decent, affordable homes in partnership with families in need. And in Bessemer, a new housing community means more families can purchase and own a new home – one with natural gas – within their budget.

Hopewell Crossings is a 34-acre, mixed-income housing development in Bessemer that is expected to be completed in 2026. This initiative will offer 125 new, single-family houses ranging in size and sale price. Approximately half of the new homes will be built by Habitat for Humanity Greater Birmingham and community volunteers. And all homes in the development will use affordable natural gas for their heating, water heating, cooking and logs. 

Habitat home buyers work alongside volunteers and participate in workshops to learn more about home ownership, budgeting, mortgages and more. 

Spire sponsors Bessemer home

Spire is teaming up with Habitat for Humanity Greater Birmingham to build and finance a new home in the Hopewell Crossings community. A grant from Spire is going toward the cost of construction for the new home. 

And in addition to financial support, Spire employees are volunteering their time and skills to construct the home. A team of Spire volunteers completed the first phase of construction – framing – in January 2023. 

Trim work is now underway followed by landscaping, final punch list and cleaning. 

The home is expected to be finished in March – and natural gas will be there to keep this family warm, cook food and warm water.
