Addressing food insecurity in the Metro East

More than 33 million people in the United States don’t know where their next meal is coming from. For St. Louis and the surrounding area, that translates to roughly 400,000 people who face the realities of hunger.

The St. Louis Area Foodbank provides a pathway to food security for thousands of families across 26 counties in Missouri and Illinois, working with agencies and hunger action programs to help ensure people have access to nutritious meals.

Spire has supported this organization for many years through financial contributions, board service, employee food drives and employee volunteer days through Spire’s Day for Good initiative.

“As a proud board member for the St. Louis Area Foodbank, I’m privileged to see a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the important work the Foodbank is doing to feed the entire St. Louis metropolitan area. I’m so glad that Spire spends time and resources to support the wonderful work the food bank does to feed families and address food insecurity in our region.”  – Donna Heroux, managing director, communications and marketing at Spire

Recently, the corporate communications team at Spire used their Day for Good to work in the St. Louis Area Foodbank’s repackaging center, sorting and organizing food donations. The team processed 4,610 pounds of food – enough to provide 3,763 meals for the hungry.
