Building homes, transforming lives in Bessemer, Alabama

Habitat for Humanity is not just about building houses; it's about building a legacy of change and transformation. By addressing the cycle of poverty, inspiring self-sufficiency and revitalizing neighborhoods, Habitat projects and their volunteers contribute to the creation of a more equitable and sustainable future.

A team of customer experience employees from Spire volunteered their time to make a difference with ReStore Birmingham, Habitat’s discount home improvement center. All proceeds from ReStore go toward the construction of Habitat’s affordable housing initiatives.

“At Spire, I get to lead the team that connects customers with critical payment assistance programs to keep their homes warm—so we have firsthand experience seeing how challenging it can be to afford the basics.

"Habitat for Humanity, and ReStore, are providing an important support system to help families get on their feet and break the cycle of poverty,” said Vernita Rodgers, manager of community and agency services.

The relationship between Habitat for Humanity and corporate sponsors like Spire not only provides a pathway to homeownership for families on limited incomes, but also supports them in building a foundation for a brighter future.

In 2023, Spire employees volunteered more than 230 hours for Birmingham’s Habitat for Humanity chapter, and provided funding that supplemented construction costs for a new house in the Hopewell Crossings development in Bessemer, Ala.

The beneficiaries of homes in Hopewell Crossings represent the many individuals seeking affordable housing solutions. Recipients, along with other volunteers, were actively engaged in the creation of their new homes. The project provides shelter and also fosters dignity, hope, educational achievement, career advancement and civic responsibility.

Moreover, the 125 homes in Hopewell Crossings are designed with sustainability in mind. By using affordable natural gas for heating, water heating and cooking, Spire contributes to the creation of healthy living environments that go beyond shelter. This commitment to sustainable living aligns with Spire's broader mission and reinforces our dedication to making a positive impact on the communities we serve.
