For children facing a disease like cancer, feeling like a “normal” kid may be impossible. But organizations like Rapahope in Mobile, Alabama, seek to change that.

We awarded Rapahope one of four 2024 Inspire Awards to recognize their work bringing joy to children facing cancer. The award honors nonprofits and their contributions to enriching lives and fueling stronger, more vibrant communities.

Rapahope offers free programs throughout the year for children, siblings and families. Their week-long camp ─ Camp Rapahope ─ allows children who have been diagnosed with cancer, ages 7-17, a week filled with laughter, activities and fun. Trained medical staff are present 24 hours a day, providing families peace of mind.

Spire has been a long-time financial supporter of the Camp Rapahope Foundation, providing grant funding that goes toward the organization’s summer camp.

"Healing cancer is more than just chemo and radiation," said Melissa McNichol, executive director of Rapahope Children's Retreat Foundation. "Rapahope helps healing through a raised level of courage, endurance, acceptance, laughter, faith, hope and love. Partners such as Spire help ensure these programs continue."

Tammy Garrett, a pipeline analyst at Spire and longtime Rapahope volunteer, attended the award presentation.

“This is the best thing I do every year, and I get back tenfold of what I give,” Tammy said. “As long as kids have cancer, we hope to be here providing this camp.”
