Improving lives and building character, one project at a time

spire employees building deck on campground

Camp Chandler is a 105-acre camp nestled along the shores of Lake Jordan in Wetumpka, Alabama. Since 1928, this YMCA of Greater Montgomery camp has provided meaningful experiences and lasting memories for kids of all ages and abilities through overnight and day summer camps, retreats and specialty camps. And with more than 20 different activities offered, plenty of maintenance is needed to keep things running smoothly.

That’s where Spire employees have stepped in to help – volunteering and making improvements to the camp as part of the company’s Spire Serves program. As part of the program, each employee receives eight hours of paid time off to volunteer at a nonprofit organization of their choosing as part of the company’s “Day for Good” initiative.

Employees’ service at the camp over the last several years includes:

  • Replacing the activities building deck, driveway border fencing, swim area boardwalk, boat storage roof and softball field backstop
  • Repairing the horse fence
  • Installing a new frisbee golf course
  • Upgrading the seating at the outdoor chapel

This year, Spire employees from Montgomery and Opelika replaced 60 feet of walking deck at the swim area and repainted the activities building.

“We don’t have the experience, tools or manpower to do some of these big projects we need done, so it’s amazing that Spire employees are always willing to use their time and talent to help us out. Spire is an amazing company for encouraging their employees to get out and give back to organizations like ours,” said Scot Patterson, executive director of Camp Chandler.

All the work performed by employees will have a lasting impact on the community and future campers for years to come. For more information on the work that’s done at YMCA Camp Chandler, visit their website.
